Filling Our Shoes.

Like many children throughout the world, I would leave a shoe outside my bedroom the night of December 5, the eve of St. Nicholas. In the morning I’d find it filled with an ornament or candy or other gift. According to a famous legend, this tradition began in the third century when St. Nicholas, the bishop of Myra, dropped a bag of gold down the chimney of a poor man’s home. The man had three daughters and no money for dowries, putting them at risk for being sold into slavery or prostitution. Nicholas’s gift provided the family with hope and opportunities for a new life.

The presence of the Lord in our lives won’t show up in the form of cash in our fireplace. However, today’s readings encourage us to trust God to provide us with the same sense of hope that St. Nicholas’s gold gave the impoverished family. Psalm 27 says we should “wait for the Lord with courage,” and believe in “the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living.” While we may not understand the kind of trepidation that comes from lack of a wedding dowry, the experience of anxiety is something many of us can relate to. The legend of St. Nicholas is a reminder to always make room for miracles in our lives.

Filling shoes with gifts is symbolic of the deeper meaning of Advent. During this holy season of waiting, we ask God to guide our footsteps and be our guiding light. We pray that God will fill our shoes with the gifts of courage, persistence, and faith so we can better walk in the direction of faith, hope, and love.
